Knights of Peter Claver National Office: (504) 821-4225 |  | Since 1909, the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary has striven to positively impact the social justice issues that Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. championed. Issues that have far too long affected the communities we serve throughout North and South America.
Numerous studies, news articles, and publications, as well as the realities we see on an everyday basis, constantly remind us of mounting challenges and struggles, but also, more importantly, call us to be actors rather than bystanders. It is not enough to shake one’s head or throw one’s hands in the air in frustration. As an organization rooted in spirituality, fraternal ideas, and faith, we must play a leading role in correcting these social ills.
Dr. King’s vision, words, actions, and dreams require us to keep the torch for social justice held high and on fire.
All of America is a much better nation as a result of Dr. King’s work and ultimate sacrifice. We owe it to him, our ancestors, and ourselves to celebrate his legacy and dedication through service and sacrifice. So whether you volunteer at or donate to a shelter, food pantry, church or school; or if you go out and feed the homeless, visit the elderly or shut-ins, or mentor local youth; celebrate this Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a "day on" to do service and not just another day off from work!
The Knights of Peter Claver and the Civil Rights Movement:
In our opposition to segregation, the Knights of Peter Claver has worked alongside the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Urban League. One of our leading officers, civil rights attorney A.P. Tureaud, worked with future Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall to help overturn segregation laws. The order’s New Orleans headquarters hosted early meetings that led to the launch of the civil rights movement.”
Our members continue to serve their communities as judges, teachers, lawyers, doctors, medical professionals, religious, laborers, and other professions. As members of the Knights of Peter Claver, their occupations and interactions within society are rooted in our mission of “Spreading Faith, Hope, and Love, through Friendship, Unity, and Christian Charity”. - Participate in a PRISON MINISTRY PROGRAM
- Volunteer at your local RONALD McDONALD HOUSE
- Volunteer at a local SCHOOL or CHURCH
- Participate in a 5K BENEFIT WALK or RUN
- Create or maintain a BEAUTIFICATION PROJECT
- Participate in a local MARCH/ RALLY/ PARADE
- Participate in or host a community FORUM
