ST. PETER CLAVER AWARDS OF MERIT
All resumes of nominees for these awards must bear the seal of the Council or Court and the signatures of the Grand Knight/Lady and the Financial Secretary. ALL RESUMES MUST BE RECEIVED IN THE NATIONAL OFFICE BY APRIL 1.
These awards are in two (2) categories as follows:
1. Gold Medal of Merit
This award is presented to any person, who has in his or her field of endeavor or independently, contributed toward the advancement of mutual understanding, enhanced and enriched the prestige and dignity of the individual and foster the cause of better human relationships of humankind. These resumes are reviewed and rated by the Executive Board members and forwarded to the Supreme Knight/Lady for final selection.
2. Silver Medal of Merit
This award is restricted to the members of the Order. Consideration for determining the recipient is based on:
significant and outstanding contributions for the Good of the Order;
personal achievements or contributions to the Church and community;
and individual examples of outstanding Catholic leadership.
Recipients from each of the six District/States are selected annually.
These resumes are reviewed and rated by the “Awards Committee” and forwarded to the Supreme Knight/Lady for final selection.
THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE YEAR AWARD
THE “Father John N. LaBauve, S.V.D.” National Council of the Year Award
This award was established and designed so that every Council in good financial standing would be eligible to participate. It is also to recognize some of the outstanding contributions and accomplishments that a Council has given to the church, charity, community and our Noble Order.
THE NATIONAL FAMILY OF THE YEAR
THIS AWARD WAS ESTABLISHED TO HONOR THE UNIT IN GOOD STANDING. THIS AWARD MUST INCLUDE ACTIVE JUNIOR KNIGHTS, JUNIOR DAUGHTERS, SENIOR KNIGHTS AND SENIOR LADIES FOR ELIGIBILITY.
THE NATIONAL GRAND KNIGHT/GRAND LADY OF THE YEAR AWARD
This award was established and designed so that every Grand Knight/Grand Lady in good financial standard would be eligible to participate. It is also to recognize leadership, outstanding contributions and accomplishments that the Grand Knight/Grand Lady has exhibited to the church, charity, community and our Noble Order.
THE KPC VOLUNTEER SERVICE HOURS AWARD
The goal of this National Project is to donate to the Church and community THE NOBLE ORDER. The Volunteer SERVICE PROJECT WILL l begin APRIL 1ST , the year and will end on APRIL 1ST OF THE NEXT YEAR We can accomplish our mission by all units joining forces and working cooperatively for the good of the Knights of Peter Claver Inc. All donated hours during the SERVICE PROJECT TIME WILL BE DOCUMENTED along with services performed and financial contributions. At the end of the year, all hours and financial contributions will be recorded, calculated and disseminated to all divisions. WE WILL AWARD THE TOP THREE IN EACH UNIT
TREE OF LIFE FOUNDATION
The Tree of Life is displayed in the National Headquarters of the Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. It is emblazoned with name plates affixed as leaves. The Tree of Life appears on the wall facing the entrance of the National Headquarter at 1825 Orleans Avenue in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Tree of Life Foundation was adopted at the 1987 National Convention. The purpose of the Foundation is to aid the relief and cure of persons with Alzheimer to enhance and increase religious vocations at all levels.
The Tree of Life offers an opportunity to memorialize deceased family members, friends, and loved ones. This special tribute can also commemorate service to the organization, as well as note the establishment of a Council or Court.
CHARITY FUND APPEAL
The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies’ Auxiliary, under the provisions of the Constitution and By-Laws of the Order, established the National Charity Fund. Councils and Courts make contributions to this fund, which are distributed back into the community. A committee recommendation process, at the annual National Convention, determines how the funds are distributed. Funds are allocated to meet the needs of churches, schools, social services programs and other worthy human needs.
Guidelines
All applications for funding must be submitted by a Council or Court, signed by the Grand Knight/Lady and the Financial Secretary. The Council or Court seal must be affixed to the application. A brief but clear description of the organization, person, institution or agency to receive the fund, must be provided. This narrative must also state how the requested funds will be used and the person to administer the funds must be named. Approved requests will be sent to the requesting Council or Court but will be made payable to the operating entity. A notice of the award will be sent to the recipient, requesting a verification or receipt.

SCHOLARSHIPS
The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary annually award scholarships to practicing Catholics, who are graduating from high school. They, or one of their parents, must be a Claver member. The National Scholarship Committee of the Knights of Peter Claver and the Ladies Auxiliary selects the two most highly-qualified students from the applications submitted.
These two top applications received the memorial scholarship in honor of Thomas R. Lee, Jr. These scholarship are in the amount of $2,000.00 for a period of two academic years – a total of $4,000.00. The recipient must maintain a “B” average in his or her freshman year of college to receive $2,000.00 for the second year.
Additional scholarships, named in honor of Willie Polk, Jr., are awarded on the State and District levels. These scholarships are a one-time amount of $1,0000 per recipient for the freshman academic year. The number of Willie Polk, Jr. Memorial Scholarships for any given year is determined by the profits derived from the National Raffle of the preceding year.
All scholarship awards are paid directly to the RECIPIENT WITH PROPER DOCUMENTATION.

SOARING HIGH:
A Tutorial Program
Statistics indicate that most African American student score poorly on standardized test and are, therefore, more likely to be poor academic achievers in school.
In response to the special academic needs of our children, the Knights and Ladies of St. Peter Claver continue to meet the challenge of offering programs to address the unique needs of our youth, thereby allowing them to achieve according to their potential.
Each member donates twenty-five (.25) cent each year to fund Soaring High projects. This program provides tutorial assistance, after-school homework assistance, mathematics, reading, testing, and other skills needed for academic achievement. Donations should be make payable to the Knights of Peter Claver, clearly marked for the Soaring High Fund. Fund-raiser, such as the Silent Auction and the Fashion Show Luncheon are held each year at National Convention to provide funds for the Soaring High Program.
Guidelines
All applications for funding must be submitted by a Council or Court, signed by the Grand Knight/Lady and the Financial Secretary. The Council or Court seal must be affixed to the application. A narrative describing the program, noting the target population teaches and curriculum must be provided. A detailed budget must be submitted. Evaluation and financial reports are required upon completion of the program.

SICKLE CELL NATIONAL PROJECT
The Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary give funds to victims of Sickle Cell Anemia and to institutions or individuals that provide research in the area. Each member of the organization contributes on dollar ($1.00) each year to fund this project.
Guideline
All grant requests must be submitted by a Council or Court, signed by the Grand Knight/Lady and the Financial Secretary. The Council or Court seal must be affixed to the request. If the request is to assist a victim of Sickle Cell Anemia, documentation from the attending physician must be a part of the application. If the request is to assist an institution with Sickle Cell research, a description of the institution and its work must be a part of the application. If the request is to assist an individual and the research institution must be a part of the application.
Approved funds will be sent to the requesting Council or Court, payable to the appropriate party. A notice of the award will sent to the receiving party, requesting a verification of receipt.

OUR MOTHER OF AFRICA CHAPEL
The Knights of Peter Claver, Inc. donated $100,000.00 toward the construction of Our Mother of Africa Chapel in the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Council and Courts contributed toward this donation. Other Catholic organizations, religious communities and dioceses also made extraordinary sacrifices to contribute to this monument of African American Catholic faith. This chapel was dedicated at the Closing Liturgy of the 8th National Black Catholic Congress in August 1997. It represents African American history and its deep root in Catholicism. It speaks of the dreams and hopes of our ancestors, ourselves and our descendants.
As the largest predominately African American Catholic Fraternal organization in the world, we are proud to take our rightful place in this magnificent Shrine, which is dedicated to our Mother.
HUMAN DEVELOPMENT
Social Justice Sensitive to the needs of God’s people and belief in human dignity and worth, the Knights of Peter Claver and Ladies Auxiliary provide funds to be used for humanitarian causes. The funds for this project are provided through the dues structure. Each Council and Court is assessed ten-cent (.10) per year for each member. Contributions should be made by a check payable to the Knights of Peter Claver and clearly noted for the Human Development fund. This contribution should not be combined with other donations or payments. Grant applications for these funds are reviewed at the National Convention by an appointed committee, which makes recommendations for approval. Funds can be presented to organizations or individuals to promote and provide for humanitarian cause.

VOCATIONAL PROGRAM
The National Vocations Committee of the Knights of Peter Claver and Knights of Peter Claver, Ladies Auxiliary was founded to encourage vacations in the African-American Community. The fertile will be the Junior Knights, Junior Daughters and any Ministry to youth within the confines of the local parishes and wider community.
The organization will be structured similar to the National Federation of Youth Ministry but the focus will be on vacations for the ordained, religious and lay ministry. The target group will be the Jr. Knights and the Junior Knights Daughters, Youth Ministries, Young Adult Ministries, Altar Servers and Acolytes.
Recruitment is essential and can be done successfully by the target group. Youth moderators, Clergy, permanent Deacons and Laity. It must be the personal responsibility of all involved to seek out potential candidates who must be nurtured. Outreach is a necessity.
Activities will be well planned to foster interest in vocations. They should be well rounded. They should include catechizes, formation, workshops, retreats, annual conferences, community services, recreation, frequent visits to seminaries and religious houses of formation, and spiritual direction, a foretaste of what is accomplished.
We will not aspire to be an island unto self. Support groups such as other parish ministries, parish adoptions, campus ministry along with the Knights of Peter Claver and the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary are essential. Clerical support, the African American Bishops and those Bishops who show interest in the outcome, Seminarians, Permanent Deacons and the concerned Laity should be encourage to support this noble cause.
